About the book:

This volume is the outcome of a seminar on the subject held in January 2015 at the K.R. Cama Oriental Institute, Mumbai. It contains twenty-four papers from eminent scholars on Southeast Asia who participated in the seminar besides some others commissioned especially for this volume. The first two essays, namely those by Pierre-Yves Manguin and Robert Brown, address the issues that have been raised in the ongoing debate among scholars about the `Indianisation' process in Southeast Asia. While Manguin throws new light on this subject, Brown addresses one specific theory relating to the development of similar themes and ideas in India and Southeast Asia, namely that of `Convergence', explaining the problems associated with it. In the third, John Whitmore convincingly demonstrates how on the eastern seaboard of mainland Southeast Asia the influences came both from India and from China.
